  • This plant is a Chinese Angelica, Angelica dahurica, in Chinese Bai Zhi. The knowledge about the medical properties of this plant's roots, so-called Dahurican root, has been dated back to Ancient China, already as early as 400 BC. It is from a family called Apiaceae or Umbelliferae that includes many thousands of species, many of which are used by humans as vegetables or herbs and spices, like carrot, parsley, dill, coriander, celery, carroway, cumin, parsnip, chervil, angelica, anise or fennel. Other species in the same family are instead very poisonous.<br />

  • Tibetan antelope, Pantholops hodgsonii, Tibetan plateau, Qinghai, China. Male, grazing in the setting sun. A few yerars ago these animals were extremely shy, because they had been shot at for decades, decimating the population. Since the nation-wide hunting ban was instated in 2009, virtually all wildlife species are coming back in China, and many are now slowly becoming less shy.

  • Japanese Rhinoceros beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma dichotoma, Guangshui, Hubei province, China. In Chinese the beetle is called '獨角仙' (which translates to 'single-horned immortal') or '雙叉犀金龜' Japanese rhinoceros beetles are a very popular subject in gambling, like Siamese fighting fish and cricket fights. In the most popular game, two different male beetles are placed on a log.[2] They will battle each other, trying to push each other off the log, the one to stay on the log is the winner. This is a huge source and loss of money to many people, especially in the Ryukyu Islands. By means of their forked horn they lift other males off the ground and throw them into the air.
