Raja Ampat är världens bästa ställe att se svarta mantor, så kallade melanistiska individer, som revmantan på bilden. De utgör mer än en tredjedel av mantapopulationen här.<br />

BLACK MANTAS. The manta rays are the world's largest rays feed by filtering plankton, the sea's smallest inhabitants. Raja Ampat is the world's best place to see the black mantas, so-called melanistic individuals, like the reef manta in the picture. They make up for more than a third of the manta population here.

THE NEW MANTA<br />
At the cleaning station Manta Ridge in Raja Ampat, reef mantas, Mobula alfredi, gather daily to receive their beauty treatment. In 2009, the world's researchers realized that the world's manta rays are not just one species, but in fact two: the giant oceanic manta rays, Mobula birostris, and the reef manta rays, Mobula alfredi, shown in this image.

Ancient arms - Three feeding arms hanging down from a crinoid, a marine animal, which here clings itself onto a coral sea fan. These ancient animals are often called sea lilies and they live in both shallow water and as depth water as 9 000 meters (30 000 feet). This variant have both small legs and longer feeding arms, and they can also actively swim buy undulating their feeding arms in an amazing swimming style.<br />
<br />
There are some 600 crinoid species in the ocean. Long time ago they were much more abundant and diverse, and limestone beds dating to the Paleozoic are almost entirely made up of disarticulated crinoid fragments.

  • Diamond squid, Thysanoteuthis rhombus, juvenile (2 cm), Longdong, Taiwan. This is the first every sighted juvenile diamond squid in Taiwan. A rare shot. When adult it is a huge squid and grow up to one meter in mantle length and weigh up to 30 kg. This unusual cephalopod lives in pair-like relationships so if one is caught by squid fisherman, the other diamond squid will likely remain in the area until it is also caught.<br />

  • Hummingbird bobtail squid, Euprymna berryi (2 cm), Kenting Nationalpark, Taiwan.<br />
The hummingbird bobtail squid move in a spectacular and drone-like manner using either their Dumbo-like fins attached to the head or a jet engine in reversed gear. This magician can also glow with a specialised light organ that is inhabited by a bioluminescent bacteria. The "blue glow" counter-illumination hides the squid’s silhouette by helping it blend in with its surroundings.<br />
